Accidental Hedonist has been providing far better, and more extensive coverage of the Mad Cow issue, but I feel compelled to make an observation of my own based on
this blurb that came across my RSS feed yesterday.
It appears that, having confirmed the third case of Mad Cow Disease in the U.S., the USDA is going to scale back testing for Mad Cow Disease. This must make sense to someone.
I'm reminded of a wonderful, cynical book I read years ago called
The House of God. It's a semi-fictional account of an internship year at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where a group of interns, led by their resident, 'The Fat Man,' subscribed to a set of 'laws of the House of God.' One of the laws said, 'If you don't take a temperature, you won't find a fever.'
It sounds to me, as though someone in the USDA has been reading
The House of God.
